About Fontainhas
Fontainhas is a working neighbourhood rather than a preserved one, which is why it is worth walking. The colours are maintained under local rules, and the houses are lived in.
It covers only a few blocks, so an hour is enough. Go before ten, both for the light and because the lanes are too narrow to enjoy once cars are moving.
Fontainhas is Panjim's old Latin quarter and keeps its Portuguese character: narrow winding lanes, old villas with projecting balconies painted pale yellow, green or blue, and red-tiled roofs.
It sits at the foot of Altinho hill, a short walk from the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in the centre of town.
