10 restaurants worth booking in Goa
Goa eats best when you plan a few meals rather than drifting into whatever is nearest the beach. These ten cover Goan home cooking, a couple of serious modern kitchens and a seafood lunch with sand under the table.

The list is spread across Panjim, the North Goa villages and the Salcete coast in the south, so there is something within reach wherever you stay. Every restaurant here was checked against a current listing, the restaurant's own site or recent press in 2025–2026; places we could not confirm as open at their stated address were left out. The order follows the map, not a ranking.

Goan · seafood thali · Panjim
A busy first-floor dining room on 18th June Road that has been serving seafood and Goan thalis since 1978. It is the lunch most people in Panjim will point you to.
Order the fish thali. Reviewers describe a surmai fry alongside fish curry, sol kadhi, crab, shellfish and dried fish with rice, which is more than most people finish. Rava-fried bombil and prawns are the usual additions if you are sharing.
This is a canteen-style room rather than a restaurant for lingering. Tables fill quickly at lunch and you may be seated with others, and service gets short with people when it is full.
- Area: 18th June Road, Panjim
- Cuisine: Goan, seafood
- Best for: Fish thali at lunch
- Timing: Busy at lunch; arrive before 12:30pm
Good to know
Go early for lunch, or expect to wait on the stairs.

Viva Panjim
Goan · home-style · Fontainhas, Panjim
A family-run restaurant in an old Indo-Portuguese house down a lane in Fontainhas, cooking the Goan Catholic dishes you rarely find on beach menus.
The menu lists the classics by name: xacuti, cafreal, balchao, recheado, sorpotel and cabidel. Prawn balchao and chicken cafreal are the dishes people come back for, with bebinca or serradura to finish. Vegetable vindaloo covers the vegetarians at the table.
The room is small and full of old furniture and tiles, which is most of the charm. Some diners find the sauces heavy and the prices higher than the setting suggests, so order a mix rather than three curries.
- Area: Rua 31 de Janeiro, Fontainhas
- Cuisine: Goan, seafood
- Best for: Cafreal and balchao in the old quarter
- Timing: Separate lunch and dinner service
Good to know
Pair it with an evening walk through Fontainhas before dinner.

Goan · heritage recipes · Miramar, Panjim
A Miramar restaurant built around recipes from Goan Hindu and Catholic homes, and one of the easier places to try Goan vegetarian dishes properly.
Sorpotel, prawn balchao and Goan prawn curry are the meat and fish orders. Vegetarians should look for foddi (shallow-fried vegetable slices) and bharleli kelli (stuffed banana), which rarely appear elsewhere.
It is a sit-down, slightly formal room near the Marriott rather than a casual café, and it is priced accordingly.
- Area: Miramar, Panjim
- Cuisine: Goan, seafood
- Best for: Goan vegetarian dishes alongside seafood
- Booking: Recommended in season
“It has been an arduous task but the work of bringing back the "lost" food of Goa has indeed been both a satisfying and fulfilling journey.”

South Indian · peninsular · Assagao, North Goa
A long-running Assagao restaurant in a restored Portuguese-era house, cooking the food of Kerala, Andhra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka rather than Goa.
The menu moves across the southern states. Kerala mutton curry and Andhra spicy prawns are the dishes reviewers single out, eaten with appam or parotta, and thoran and avial cover the vegetables. Cocktails use curry leaf, tamarind and kokum.
It sits between a casual place and fine dining, in price as in feel. Dinner in the garden is the better sitting.
- Area: Assagao, North Goa
- Cuisine: South Indian
- Best for: A long dinner in a garden setting
- Booking: Recommended in season
“There are no must-tries because everything is meant to be. Each recipe is a unique creation, inspired by traditional flavours but interpreted with a fresh perspective.”

Indian · modern · Assagao, North Goa
Indian cooking with some Goan dishes, served in a candlelit villa in Assagao. It suits a group with mixed tastes, since the vegetarian side is as strong as the rest.
Current listings point to the Jamun mutton curry and the Goan prawn curry, with paneer 65 and dal makhani for vegetarians. The coffee crème caramel gets mentioned in almost every review.
The lane to the villa is narrow. Parking is limited, so a taxi is simpler.
- Area: Mazal Vado, Assagao
- Cuisine: North Indian, South Indian, Goan
- Best for: Dinner with a mixed veg and non-veg group
- Booking: Recommended in season
“When we started creating the menu at Jamun, the idea was to celebrate Goan food and work with local ingredients and flavours I grew up with.”

South Indian · modern · Siolim, North Goa
A modern South Indian restaurant near St Anthony's Church in Siolim, from the group behind Indian Accent. It is the most polished meal on this list, and the most expensive.
Chef Harish Rao's menu runs from Kerala to Telangana. Listings and reviews point to naranga (citrus) chicken, curry leaf snapper, mutton pepper roast and crab with Guntur chilli, and the coconut-based desserts. There are vegetarian and vegan options.
The bar is a draw in its own right and has won awards for its cocktails. Service is knowledgeable, and the bill reflects it.
- Area: Vaddy, Siolim
- Cuisine: Modern South Indian
- Best for: A special-occasion dinner and cocktails
- Booking: Recommended in season

Goan · beach seafood · Calangute, North Goa
A beachfront restaurant on Calangute sand that has been running since 1932. It is big, busy and straightforward, and the place for a seafood lunch looking at the sea.
Stick to the Goan and seafood side of a long menu: fish cafreal, stuffed crab, mackerel recheado and prawn curry with rice. Lobster is on the menu if you want to spend more. Veg xacuti is the vegetarian option people mention.
Calangute beach is crowded in season, and evenings bring live music. Lunch is calmer if you want to hear the table.
- Area: Calangute Beach
- Cuisine: Goan, seafood
- Best for: Seafood lunch on the beach
Good to know
Ask for a table on the sand rather than indoors.

Martin's Corner
Goan · family restaurant · Betalbatim, South Goa
A large family-run restaurant in Betalbatim, a few kilometres inland from the beach, and one of the best-known places to eat in Salcete.
The menu is long and covers Goan, Indian and Chinese dishes, but the seafood is why people drive here. Current listings highlight grilled lobster, lobster thermidor and prawn pulao.
It is a big, lively room that suits families and groups more than a quiet dinner for two. It is not on the beach, so plan on a taxi or scooter.
- Area: Betalbatim, South Goa
- Cuisine: Goan, seafood, multi-cuisine
- Best for: A seafood dinner with a family group
“Our secret lies in the hands of our mother. It is her masala that is special and, believe me, had we started selling just the masala and closed the restaurant, we would have earned more”

Goan · modern · Benaulim, South Goa
Chef Avinash Martins' restaurant on Taj Hotel Road in Benaulim, which reworks Goan ingredients and recipes. It is the best case for dressing up for dinner in the south.
Cavatina opened in 2012 with a Western menu and has since moved to reworked Goan food built on local produce. Dishes people single out include valchi bhaji (Malabar spinach) with morels and a serradura tart. There are vegetarian options.
Reviewers often compare it favourably on price with similar cooking in Mumbai or Delhi, but it is still a considered meal rather than a quick one.
- Area: Taj Hotel Road, Benaulim
- Cuisine: Modern Goan
- Best for: Modern Goan dinner in the south
- Booking: Recommended in season
Good to know
If you are staying in North Goa, pair it with a night in the south.

Goan · riverside seafood · Cavelossim, South Goa
The original Fisherman's Wharf, open since 2005 on the banks of the Sal river near Mobor, with tables looking over the water.
Seafood cooked in the Goan way is the menu's core. Current listings point to pomfret, tawa fish and lobster thermidor, and the restaurant recommends its bebinca for dessert.
It has since grown into a chain with branches elsewhere in Goa and in other cities. The Cavelossim riverside site is the one worth the trip; check the address before setting off.
- Area: Riverside, Cavelossim
- Cuisine: Goan, seafood
- Best for: Dinner by the river
Good to know
Arrive before sunset to eat by daylight on the river.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to book restaurants in Goa?
From November to February, and especially between Christmas and New Year, book the popular dinner places in Assagao, Siolim and Benaulim a few days ahead. Busy lunch places such as Ritz Classic in Panjim are easier if you simply arrive before the lunch rush.
Which restaurants close in the monsoon?
Beach shacks come down before the rains and are rebuilt around October, and many North Goa restaurants take an annual break somewhere between June and September. Established restaurants in Panjim and the larger villages are more likely to stay open. Check the restaurant's Instagram or call before driving out in the monsoon.
Is it easy to eat vegetarian in Goa?
Yes, though Goan menus lean heavily on fish, pork and chicken. Every restaurant on this list has vegetarian dishes, and Mum's Kitchen, Jamun, Gunpowder and Hosa have particularly good ones. On a Goan menu, look for vegetable xacuti, foddi and dishes made with local greens.
What should I wear, and when do people eat?
Smart-casual is enough almost everywhere; beachwear is fine at a beach restaurant at lunch but not at a place like Hosa or Cavatina at dinner. Lunch runs roughly from noon to three and dinner from about half past seven, and many restaurants close between the two, so do not count on a late-afternoon meal.
