About Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary

Cotigao is quiet, low-key and almost never crowded. The trails are marked, the terrain is easy, and the watchtower over a waterhole is the reason most people come.

Large mammals are present but rarely seen. What you will reliably get is birds, butterflies and several hours of forest without anyone else in it.

Established in 1968, the sanctuary protects dense moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forest, with trees reaching 30 metres. Eight nature trails run through it, from 500 metres to 5 kilometres long.

A treetop watchtower stands 25 metres above a waterhole. Wildlife here includes the flying squirrel, slender loris, mouse deer, Indian pangolin and birds such as the Malabar trogon. The Velip and Kunbi communities live in and around the forest.

Entry is ticketed and the sanctuary closes well before dark. Confirm timings locally before driving out.
