About the DJI Osmo Mobile 8P

The DJI Osmo Mobile 8P is a three-axis handheld gimbal for a smartphone. It holds the phone steady while you walk, so video looks smooth rather than shaky. The phone attaches with a magnetic clamp, and the handle has a built-in extension rod and a small tripod. The gimbal can pan a full 360° without stopping.

The 8P comes with Osmo FrameTap, a small touchscreen remote that detaches from the gimbal. DJI says it can start and stop recording and control the gimbal from up to 10 m away, and show your phone's screen from up to 25 m in open space. It also tracks people and subjects in three ways: ActiveTrack 8.0 in the DJI Mimo app, the Multifunctional Module 2 in the phone's own camera app and other apps, and Apple DockKit on supported iPhones. It suits group photos, walking videos, sunset time-lapses and filming yourself without a helper. DJI states that the gimbal and the remote are not waterproof.

Tips for using it in Goa

  • DJI states the gimbal and the remote are not waterproof. Keep them away from the sea, pool splashes and rain, and put them away if a monsoon shower starts.
  • Sand can get into the motors and the folding joints. Do not stand the tripod directly on the beach; set it on a bag, a towel or a flat rock.
  • Wipe off sea spray with a soft, slightly damp cloth, then dry it, before folding it away.
  • In humid weather, let it warm up for a few minutes when you take it from an air-conditioned room outside, so condensation can clear before you use it.
  • DJI lists an operating range of 0° to 40° C. Do not leave it in direct midday sun, on a scooter seat or in a parked car.
  • Check your phone fits before you head out. With a case, the combined thickness must not exceed 11 mm.

Common questions

Will my phone fit?

DJI recommends phones 67–84 mm wide, 6.9–11 mm thick and 170–300 g in weight. A phone case is fine as long as the phone and case together are no more than 11 mm thick. DJI publishes a full compatibility list on its website.

Do I need an app?

Basic stabilisation works with your phone's own camera. The DJI Mimo app (Android 9 or later, iOS 15 or later) adds ActiveTrack 8.0 and the creative shooting modes. On an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later, Apple DockKit tracking works in the native Camera app.

Can I use it at the beach or in the water?

At the beach, yes, with care. DJI states that the gimbal and the Osmo FrameTap remote are not waterproof, so keep them away from waves, splashes and rain.

How long does the battery last?

DJI quotes about 10 hours of operation and about 2.5 hours to charge. The battery is built in and cannot be swapped. You can charge the gimbal while you use it, and it can top up your phone through the USB-C port.

How far away can I control it?

DJI says the Osmo FrameTap remote can take photos, record video and control the gimbal from up to 10 m away, and mirror your phone's screen from up to 25 m in open, unobstructed spaces.
