About the DJI Mini 4K drone
The DJI Mini 4K is a small folding camera drone. DJI lists its maximum take-off weight as 246 g, which puts it in the 'nano' class (250 g or less) under India's Drone Rules, 2021. It records 4K video on a 3-axis gimbal, and DJI rates it for up to 31 minutes' flight per battery in test conditions.
Being in the nano class makes it simpler to fly legally, but not rule-free. Under the Drone Rules, 2021, a nano drone does not need a type certificate or third-party insurance, and its pilot does not need a remote pilot licence. The rules still say a drone must be registered on the Digital Sky platform with a Unique Identification Number unless it is exempted, and the text contains no such exemption for nano drones. Before every flight you must check the Digital Sky airspace map. Flying in green zones needs no permission. Yellow and red zones need permission first.
Much of Goa is restricted. The areas around Dabolim airport and INS Hansa, and around Mopa airport, fall under airport and defence restrictions. District magistrates also issue temporary drone bans. Tips for using it in Goa
- Check the Digital Sky airspace map (digitalsky.dgca.gov.in) for your exact spot before every flight. The Drone Rules make this check compulsory.
- Do not fly anywhere near Dabolim airport, INS Hansa or Mopa airport. Look out for temporary bans announced by the North Goa and South Goa district magistrates.
- Sea breezes pick up in the afternoon. Fly in the calmer early morning, and bring the drone back well before the battery runs low.
- Never fly over crowds, festivals or people who have not agreed to be filmed.
- Keep sand out of the motors: take off and land from a bag or a flat, clean surface rather than directly from the beach.
Common questions
Does a drone under 250 g need registration in India?
Being under 250 g removes some requirements, but not all. Under the Drone Rules, 2021, nano drones do not need a type certificate or third-party insurance, and their pilots do not need a remote pilot licence. Rule 14 says a drone must be registered on Digital Sky with a Unique Identification Number unless exempted, and the published rules do not exempt nano drones from this. Many online guides say otherwise, so do not assume weight alone means no registration.
Can I fly a drone at the beach in Goa?
Only if the spot is in a green zone on the Digital Sky airspace map and no local ban is in force. Parts of Goa near Dabolim airport and INS Hansa, and near Mopa airport, are restricted. District magistrates in Goa also issue temporary bans, such as around Dabolim during VIP visits, and South Goa issued a district-wide ban on drones of any size in May 2025. Check before every flight.
Do I need a pilot licence to fly it?
No. The Drone Rules, 2021 do not require a remote pilot licence or certificate for operating a nano drone. You still have to follow the airspace rules.
What happens if I break the rules?
The Drone Rules, 2021 allow penalties of up to ₹1 lakh. Local orders can carry separate consequences. You are responsible for following national and local rules.
How long can it fly?
DJI rates it for up to 31 minutes per battery in windless test conditions. Real flights are shorter, especially in coastal wind. Three batteries are included.
How far can it fly from me?
DJI quotes a maximum transmission distance of 10 km (FCC) or 6 km (CE/SRRC/MIC), measured unobstructed and free of interference. Those are test figures, not a safe operating distance. Keep the drone close and where you can see it, especially near the sea, where wind can pick up quickly.
